BOCA COMPANY DEVELOPS MEDICINES FROM MARINE LIFE

Russ Kerr seems perfect to father the first U.S. medicine from marine life. The Stanford-educated
research professor lived on a sailboat off Fort Lauderdale until his family outgrew it. His office
walls are cluttered with pictures from ocean expeditions. He even dresses the part, wearing a lime-
and forest-green Hawaiian shirt as he patrols his laboratory at Florida Atlantic University.

FAU CENTER OF EXCELLENCE SPAWNS SECOND SPIN-OFF COMPANY
DEBRA KAIN - FAU MEDIA CONTACT (December 6, 2004) - Building upon the successes of the Center of
Excellence in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology at Florida Atlantic University, a second start-up company
has been established as part of what is anticipated to be a biotech boom in Palm Beach County.
Dr. Salvatore Lepore, assistant professor of chemistry at FAU, and his wife, Susan Lepore, have recently
teamed to establish Custom Synthesis Inc. (CSI), a company based in Delray Beach, Florida. CSI specializes
in the synthesis of custom organic compounds for biotech and pharmaceutical researchers. The firm has
already been retained by Scripps Florida to support its medicinal chemistry group.

or Eckerd. But Eloy Rodriguez and his students from the University of Miami and Cornell University aren't getting a
prescription filled. They're trying to find naturally occurring compounds that can ultimately go into those little
bottles to help fight intractable pain, or cancer, or other illnesses.
